Jason Devitt and Shane Whitton’s business, Spot on Concrete Sawing, is a concrete cutting and sawing business. The demand for their services is great – they assist plumbers when they need to cut into the concrete foundations of a building to lay pipes or roadwork teams when cuts across the tarmac are needed to lay pipes or power lines.
Prior to commencing their business, Jason and Shane had experience working in this industry with another company. During this time they realized there was a shortage of qualified people and also a need for good service and quality workmanship. Two years later, after participating in the NEIS program through Mission Australia Brisbane, they are working full time, have also hired and trained two labourers and two office staff and the business is growing!
“NEIS training gave us a very clear understanding of what was needed regarding marketing and tax requirements,’ said Jason. “We had very clear steps planned for marketing before starting our business and this enabled us to hit the ground running.”
“Another thing we had assistance with was finding ‘Work Method Statements’,” said Shane. “Some of our contracts are with large companies and they required that all safety processes were in place so the work method statement assisted with securing these contracts.”
The pair also found the financial side of NEIS a benefit. “NEIS Allowance enabled us to live on a minimal income while reinvesting all the profits back into the business”, said Jason. “In our second year our turnover has nearly doubled and we have substantially invested in new plant and equipment.”
When the business commenced they had one utility, fully equipped. The business now has two more fully equipped utes and two wagons.
“Our business has grown along with our confidence in it to the point where we feel we have established a viable, long-term vehicle for our future prosperity,” said Shane.
