What businesses are eligible?
NEIS is only for new businesses - not for the purchase of existing ones or franchises. They must also be legal, insurable and reputable, as well as in an area of Skills Shortage.
Over the last twenty-one years, a wide variety of businesses have been approved. You will find some examples in the kit which will provide interesting reading. They have included everything from electronics and telecommunications, to dress design, emu breeding, importing/exporting, mud brick manufacture and swimming pool maintenance.
In the entertainment field, a NEIS client has won an Academy Award; in the music industry, a NEIS client is now one of Australia’s premier rock bands; plus there have been a large number of very smart people appear on The New Inventors on ABC Television.
Many NEIS clients start their businesses from a low capital base with limited financial resources. For this reason the majority start their businesses from home to keep overheads down where possible.
